Feng Shui in the Kitchen

The importance of the Kitchen in Feng Shui.

The mandarin Chinese word for food, ts'ai, sounds like the word for "wealth." That tells you something right away about the importance of the kitchen in Chinese culture. (The Chinese, you may have already noticed, put great faith in homonyms.) A generously stocked refrigerator and pantry symbolize the families’ wealth, and because the kitchen is the source of nourishment, a bountiful food supply also symbolizes the health, happiness, and general wellbeing of the family.

Feng shui practitioner Nick Sunderland beleives that good feng shui in the kitchen enables the cook to prepare meals that supply strength and love in addition to basic sustenance. "When food is made with love, you carry this love with you throughout the day. It affects everything you do," he says. It's no accident that people wind up gathering in the kitchen at parties—its not just for the food. The real magnet for family and guests is the feeling of being nurtured as well as fed.

The proper placement of the stove—or, in Chinese homes, the rice cooker—is critical to the feng shui of your entire home. The stove should be positioned so that you don't have your back directly to the door while cooking, so you won't be surprised by anyone coming into the kitchen. If the person cooking is startled or rattled while at the stove, his or her mood will be affected, food preparation will be thrown off, and the family will suffer as a result.

If your stove is situated so that you do have your back to the door while cooking, install a mirror over the burners. Not only will this keep you from being taken by surprise, it can also bring fortune and good luck in business. The burners, with their instant access to fire and their vital function in the preparation of the household's food, symbolize the family's success at trade and business. A mirror over the stove doubles their number and increases the family's earnings. In addition, the mirror enlarges the kitchen and opens it up to the flow of good chi.

There are some general ideas on placements of a kitchen and stove which many people follow, but each individual home and person has their own best locations, we will look at these in detail but first lets look at the basics and then we can compare these with logic later.

We will over the weeks look at individual home directions, and individual Kua numbers for best locations of kitchens. It can be a complicated process, and not often something we can follow to the correct degree, but there are always cures we put in place.
