I cannot thank you enough for the beautiful home you created for me. Nicholas Sunderland Interiors were really superb in understanding our style preferences, and using Feng Shui so subtly to create a beautiful, calm home. Having done my London homes, can you please call me to arrange to refurbish my country house and overseas properties, I want to be happy wherever I am...  Lady C. UK member 1463

Feng Shui Interior Decorating and Colour Theory

Colours play an important part in Feng shui Home Decor, as well as the office

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was the founder the physiology of colour, and his teachings made colours a subject of importance and worthy of study. For him, colours were a testament to a higher order.

Colours are a bridge between the here and the world beyond, simultaneously representing the connections that exist between body, spirit, time, and space. The sun is the originator of all colours, the source of life, and the reason why life exists. Nature is the coordinator of colours. Goethe not only explored the nature of colours, but also studied their effects on the human psyche. He noted:

"Experience has shown that individual colours can influence a person's mood and disposition."

This fact alone should challenge us to take advantage of the power of colours. The possibilities are endless, from tablecloths, curtains, and rugs to objects such as vases, bowls, flower arrangements, pictures, paintings, sculptures, lampshades, art objects

(both store-bought and homemade), and plants. Different ways of painting the walls of a room and the different shades we have available to us today provide many creative possibilities, inside and outside of the home.

Feng shui provides guidelines on how to use colours according to the five feng shui elements and yin and yang, and gives information about the symbolism and dynamics of colours in general. A basic rule is that red and black should be used sparingly. Too much red creates aggressiveness and tension, and black can cause depression and pessimism. The way a room is used also determines the choice of colours; for instance, a bedroom or a place used for relaxation calls for quiet and gentle colours, while stronger, more joyful colours are more appropriate for living rooms and kitchens.

There are also attributes to colour that work well in particular sectors. The example below outlines the properties of the colour white. Members will have this and more on its uses and effects in decorating. Join Here..

White: White represents purity and "yang" essence. White, like the white belt of a martial artist, is the colour of innocence and inexperience, but not in a negative way. After all, if the novice martial artist is wearing the belt, they must be training to improve their skills. It is also a symbol of the element Metal. White reflects light, making a room look bigger than it really is, and multiplying the output of lights, or the input from the windows. For this reason, it also functions in Chinese lore as a weak form of mirror, and it can be employed to offset mild problems in architectural Feng Shui, such as a slightly irregular room shape.

It also improves concentration, and clarity of thought, and is particularly good in the West and North west of a home, or room or office.
