The Nine Stars
Flying Star feng shui works with nine stars, each carrying an element and a character. In any given period, one star is the prosperous star, the most beneficial energy of the era.

Three Charts in Every Home
A complete Flying Star chart layers three grids of nine palaces:
- Period chart: the era's energy, fixed by when the home was built or last renovated.
- Mountain chart: governs people, health, and relationships. Its stars fly according to the home's sitting direction.
- Facing chart: governs wealth and opportunity. Its stars fly according to the facing direction.
Each palace shows three numbers: the mountain star, the facing star, and the period star. Where the prosperous star lands, especially at the sitting or facing palace, shapes the home's fortune.
Sitting and Facing
Every home has a sitting direction (the back, the mountain side) and a facing direction (the front, where light and activity enter). They are always opposites. A home "sitting North, facing South" has its back to the North and its front to the South.
