Feng shui time is divided into 20-year periods. In 2024 we entered Period 9, the era of Fire.
The Three Cycles and Nine Periods
The San Yuan Jiu Yun system divides time into nine 20-year periods, grouped into three 60-year cycles. Each period is ruled by one prosperous star, whose energy dominates the era.

What Period 9 Means
Period 9 is ruled by the 9 Purple Fire star. Fire governs visibility, culture, beauty, technology, the eyes, and the heart. Classical readings associate Period 9 with the rise of culture and media, the prominence of women, and industries of light and heat, a shift from Period 8's Earth-driven property era.
- The 9 star is now the prosperous star. Its palace is where the era's vitality gathers.
- The 8 star, the wealth star of the last two decades, begins to recede into the past.
- The 1 star rises as the "near-future" prosperity star to watch.
Living in Period 9
In Flying Star terms, homes whose facing or sitting palace receives the 9 star are said to catch the period's momentum. Because the period chart is fixed by a home's move-in date, many practitioners advise a major renovation to "reset" a home into the new period. Whether or not you take that step, understanding your chart is the first move.
